Steve Wood began raising St. Croix Hair Sheep in 2015 with six ewes and a special ram, appropriately named Rambo.
Steve grew up on a Pennsylvania farm raising purebred Angus and Welsh ponies. At twelve years-old, Steve won the Lehigh Valley 4-H heifer grand championship in both confirmation and showmanship. In his twenties, he was a Certified Florida Horticulturist.
In his in-between farming years, he’s served as a youth pastor, pastor, president of a family-oriented non-profit organization, an author of four books, and a radio and television host. He loves spending time on both land and sea.
The inspiration for raising St. Croix Hair Sheep came from hearing an unforgettable 2014 lecture by Greg Judy of Green Pastures Farm at the Carolina Farm Stewardship Conference. Since then Steve attended Greg Judy’s Multi-species Grazing School sponsored by the Stockman Grass Farmer.
Steve’s appreciation for minerals in the health of soil, pastures, livestock, and people arose from a seven year study of the subject. He is particularly indebted to Drs. Manyard Murry and Thomas Levy, as well as the Weston-Price Foundation.
Steve is a member of the Livestock Conservancy which promotes St. Croix sheep.
Steve wrote an information-packed booklet entitled, Farming, Faith, and Family Life, to encourage a return to adventurous family living in harmony with land and animals.
Modern life tends to mold individuals and families into a grand disconnect from each other and from God and his creation. Where will the fundamental restoration of a multi-generational Christian family culture take place? A small family farm may just be the place for rebuilding a family culture—from the ground up. “In this splendid booklet, Stephen Wood explains both the ‘Why’ and ‘How’ of the Christian Home on the Farm. Wood shows that the ‘refunctionalizing’ of home life is a necessary step toward both family renewal and the restoration of a Christian culture in this land. This booklet is a rich gift to all Christian parents ... and grandparents!” Allan C. Carlson Founder and President Emeritus, The Howard Center for Family, Religion & Society Author of The Natural Family Where It Belongs: New Agrarian Essays “Steve’s book will only take an hour or so to read, but it may be an hour God can use to change the direction of your family’s life.” Marcus Grodi (from the Foreword) Author of "Life from Our Land: The Search for a Simpler Life in a Complex World"
