Our sheep appeared on Fox Carolina News, 7News WSPA, and were featured in the Greenville News and the Greenville Journal.
We raise St. Croix Sheep Hair Sheep. They do not grow wool, so they don’t need labor-intensive shearing. They grow longer hair as winter approaches and rub off the unneeded hair as spring arrives.
The St. Croix came to the United States from the U.S. Virgin Islands. They do well in warm, humid environments and are unbothered by cold weather due to their warm winter hair. They can graze right through the snow on the ground. The St. Croix hair sheep is a breed listed with the Livestock Conservatory.
Unfortunately, most breeds of sheep are prone to develop severe parasite infestations. In contrast, St. Croix sheep are widely known for their parasite resistance. It’s possible to raise healthy sheep without chemical worming using healthy grazing practices and natural supplements.
If you are interested in a starter flock, you’ll be glad to know that St. Croix averages about two lambs per birth cycle (after the first birth). St. Croix ewes are great moms and can easily give birth in the pasture if left undisturbed. Therefore, no costly barns stalls are necessary so long as lambing occurs during the warmer months.
St. Croix hair sheep are one of the most trouble-free animals you can have on your property. If left alone with ample grass, clean water, and minerals, they will thrive. They will eat weeds, kudzu, and poison ivy.
These sheep will become your friends and recognize your voice if you desire. They’ll even teach you how to talk “lamb.” It’s not uncommon while in my barn to turn around and be surprised to see a half dozen sheep standing right behind me.
If you are new to raising sheep, then schedule a visit so we can show you our rotational grazing plan, solar fencing, watering, and sorting system. We are delighted to provide advice and mentoring for the two months following a purchase from us.
These are delightful animals, and we are happy to see them increase throughout the United States. The world will be a brighter place with more flocks of St. Croix hair sheep.
